Ghosts

The first LP I’ll be releasing, Ghosts of the Living, is different than any other record I’ve released as The Darph in every way.

The sound

The new Moss record is the first one I’m recording completely out of the box (meaning the instruments are captured by a microphone rather than being fed directly into a computer). This gives it a more natural sound. You hear more of the space it was recorded in, giving it character that you can’t get by emulating a reverb chamber using a computer plugin. There are three amps being recorded using multiple microphones, each of which imparts slightly different tones to the recorded sound.

When it all comes together the sound will be more natural. There’s a healthy mix of singer-songwriter aesthetic and Pete Yorn/Tom Petty sounds in the final mix. Of course

There is an EP I recorded last year that helped me practice this new recording technique. Both will be released around the same time.

Theme

This record is about people who I have known in my life, some of whom I’ve lost touch with, that are still alive but are, for all intents and purposes, ghosts to me. The songs review my relationships with them, mistakes I’ve made, and the things I wish I could tell them if we still had a relationship.

This record is close to being done. I have a life, a wife, a child, and I have no interest in fame. I just want to release music and hope it touches some people.

For those who want to make a living off their art, I hope you success. For those who create art out of a deep need to create and express themselves, i hope that potentially never seeing any success doesn’t dissuade you from going for it because even if you never make it, there is satisfaction in knowing you created something that represents you and your feelings during a given point in time.
