About Moss

Midori Moss is the indie-alternative, sometimes experimental, solo musical project of the artist formerly known as The Darph. It is a project that combines shoegaze, singer-songwriter styles, electronic beats and synths, and experimental sounds. Midori Moss (or just Moss for short) came about after close to twenty years of trying to keep a long-term collaboration going. Eventually Moss struck out on his own. After about 20 indie releases under different band names it was time to do something real.

Since I was young I had been convinced I could not sing. Like many artists I was embarrassed, especially when singing my own lyrics. This time around I simply do not care. I am making music that I like. Creating art that is true to me. You may like it, you may think it's cringe. Either way, it doesn't matter. I'll be here doing my think, getting better at my craft, expressing myself without fear of judgement. I have no illusions that I'll be able to support myself off my music. I won't make it big and that doesn't matter.

How we got here

The first band was called Felix and Friends which was composed of a rotating lineup of players. At one time we had a drummer, guitarist, bassist, and singer. Felix and Friends being a high school band eventually broke up with members going separate ways and Moss continued making music with the name until 2017 when he decided to get just a little more serious and start fresh as The Darph. The Darph was the first serious musical project I'd ever started but I still hid behind a hint of irony and jokes. The Darph project lasted until 2023 and I finally came up with the idea for Midori Moss.

Growth in progress...

All of my previous bands were not very serious in their musical content and in their musicianship. Add to this that we only had a vocalist one single time years ago when I was in high school. I no longer wanted to create instrumental tracks that were left up to interpretation and just vibes. It was time to make music that was more direct and true to the vision I'd had most of my life. The only problem was that although I could play and record all the instruments I felt I could not sing. Well, whether I was good or terrible I needed to express myself and if I had to do it myself then I was going to, even if I sound awful.

Studio space

The first official studio space was Bear Dance studios - a spare bedroom of a townhome. I made it work. Now I work on the second floor of a detached multi-car garage which I completely finished from drywall to flooring, paint, and now it looks like a home with a proper control room and live room. One day I'll do a studio tour video.
